Finally a small amount of snow on the horizon. More snow will still be needed to make travel below treeline passable on skis. This weekend will also see temperatures below -10 for the first time in a while, bring your extra layers.

Avalanche Summary

One small windslab was observed in an alpine feature above upper Rowe Lake. Uncertain of timing as it was observed from the road through binoculars.

Snowpack Summary

Up to 10cm of new snow being re-distributed by moderate to strong winds into thin windslabs. This overlies variable snow surfaces and older windslabs in the alpine and at treeline. Due to previous warm temps and rain, there is very little snow on the ground below 1800 m.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
