Avalanche Activity

CM for 22/1 Consolidating snowpack. Instabilities remaining N through E to S asp. above 900m. Cornices prone to collapse. Mod hazard

Forecast Snow Stability: The snowpack will continue to consolidate in the warmer temperatures, however instabilities will remain within deeper accumulations on North through East to South aspects above 900 metres. Steep wind sheltered locations such as gullies, coire rims and scarp slopes will be most affected. Large weak cornices will remain present above these aspects and be prone to collapse. At lower elevations the thawing snowpack will have better stability. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Very light patchy showers will fall as rain at all levels in the morning and clear to give a dry afternoon. The freezing level will be above the summits. Strong Southerly winds will decrease in strength during the day. Observed Weather Influences: Snow showers very early morning cleared to give a dry day. The freezing level lifted to around summit levels. Winds were strong Southerly. ObservedSnowStability: There has been some consolidation within the snowpack however instabilities remain in both the recent and older windslab accumulations. Greatest accumulations are on steep North through East to South aspects above 800 metres. Large weak cornices are present above these aspects. The snowpack has better stability at lower elevations. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
