Avalanche Activity

Individual weak layers exist in the centre of the old snowpack above approximately 2500 m.

Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released especially by large additional loads especially above approximately 2500 m. Caution is to be exercised in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, and on very steep slopes at intermediate and high altitudes. In addition the hard wind slabs in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls are capable of being triggered in some cases still. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to softening of the snowpack in particular on sunny slopes at low and intermediate altitudes.

Snowpack Structure

Monday: In some localities up to 10 cm of snow has fallen above approximately 1600 m. Especially steep sunny slopes low and intermediate altitudes: The old snowpack is hard and its surface has a strong melt-freeze crust. There is a danger of falling on the hard snow surface. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to softening of the snowpack in particular on sunny slopes at low and intermediate altitudes. Especially steep west, north and northeast facing slopes high altitudes and the high Alpine regions: Weak layers exist in the old snowpack. In the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In these regions only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year.
