Avalanche Activity

As the temperature drops there will be a gradual decrease in the danger of moist avalanches.

The moist fresh snow of Tuesday and the wind slabs formed during the snowfall represent the main danger. Since Monday mostly small wind slabs formed in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas. The moist fresh snow and the scattered mostly small wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant in some cases. These avalanche prone locations are to be found on very steep slopes, in particular on near-ridge shady slopes. As the temperature drops there will be a gradual decrease in the danger of moist and wet avalanches during the night. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released especially by large additional loads. The avalanche prone locations are rare but are barely recognisable, even to the trained eye.

Snowpack Structure

The new snow of the last few days is lying on a crust in all aspects above approximately 2200 m. The new snow has bonded quite well with the old snowpack in all aspects. As a consequence of falling temperatures the snowpack will become faceted during the next few days and therefore lose strength. The old snowpack will be well bonded on steep sunny slopes. Faceted weak layers exist in the snowpack on north, northeast and northwest facing slopes. In all regions in all altitude zones only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. On Wednesday in all aspects numerous small and medium-sized avalanches were reported.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will decrease gradually.
