Highlights

MODERATE avalanche hazard exists today at all elevations.  Loose wet avalanches caused by daytime warming have to potential to grow to concerning size today. Steep slopes on solar aspects will be most concerning however some excessive warming is also possible on more shaded aspects below treeline. Monitor for changing conditions, be on the lookout for areas of unstable snow and identify features of concern.

    Surface temperatures in the Mammoth area suggest a superficial refreeze last night, as a result, you can expect surface snow to warm quickly today as the sun comes out and the temperatures rise. Loose wet avalanches may have the potential to grow to concerning size today, particularly in areas where the snow is still in a state of transition such as higher elevations, aspects with indirect sun, and northerly terrain below treeline. Heightened caution is also recommended in areas near cliff bands & rock outcroppings, and tight southerly facing couloirs where the effects of warming are amplified. Conduct your own localized assessments, monitor surface warming closely, and be ready to retreat if surface melt becomes concerning.

    Wet, sticky snow surface, rollerballs and pinwheels, and increasing boot penetration are all signs of surface warming and may foreshadow larger point release avalanches. Be wary of your exposure to terrain hazards and be prepared to retreat to less consequential terrain if you notice that surface warming is reaching concerning levels.

Our abnormally warm temperatures should remain top of mind for the backcountry enthusiast today. In addition to the rising hazard, it will be important to prepare for the difficult travel conditions that exist throughout the range. Hard and slick surfaces still exist in many areas and moist, sticky, and unconsolidated snow can make for a less than pleasant sliding experience in others. furthermore, our very thin coverage provides its own set of hazards. Be ready to deal with a wide variety of obstacles such as rocks, bushes, fallen trees, melting lakes & open creeks, and wide swaths of bare ground. Start early, bring the proper equipment for your chosen objective, and be ready to retreat if you see signs of rising hazard.
