Highlights

It's possible to trigger a slab 2-3 feet deep in very steep or wind loaded terrain. Weak layers up to three feet from the surface can collapse and fail without warning signs. Wind drifted snow in exposed areas signal that you could trigger an avalanche. Continue to be cautious in the terrain and avoid riding on steep slopes over terrain traps.

    Weak snow from January lies 2-3 feet below  the snow's surface. Though this drought layer has gained strength with time, triggering a large and widely propagating avalanche remains possible, especially in very steep terrain above about 8,000'. This problem continues to deserve respect, especially in high consequence terrain and places where the slab may be thin enough for the weight of a person or sled to hit the weak layer. You can find this layer by digging or probing or, alternatively, just avoid slopes over 30 degrees, especially over nasty terrain.

    Cornice Fall: Large triggers such as a falling cornice could trigger a larger avalanche. While unlikely, it's a good idea to give cornices some space.

    Recent avalanche near Split Rock. This avalanche was on the smaller side, but if piled up in a creek of depression (terrain trap), it could have still buried a rider.

    Snow which fell over the past several days has drifted and formed slabs in wind exposed areas. These slabs may be up to eighteen inches, are likely to be soft and may be sensitive to triggering. Wind sculpted surfaces and shooting cracks signal danger.  You are most likely to find these slabs above 8,500', near ridgetops and around cliffs. Warming temperatures may make these slabs more reactive until they settle.

Avalanche Discussion

A series of small storms with moderate winds over the past several days have produced fresh slabs of wind-drifted snow across upper-elevation terrain. In many areas these slabs are forming on a weak interface, creating the potential for human-triggered avalanches up to about two feet deep. Warming temperatures have helped to make this snow upside-down. 

A deeper, more persistent problem remains in parts of the snowpack, especially on shaded slopes.. While activity on this layer has been inconsistent, it still has the potential to produce larger, more destructive avalanches if triggered from shallow areas or near rocky features. Weak layers like this can linger long after storms have passed and can surprise travelers who assume the snowpack has stabilized.

Travelers today should watch for signs of instability such as recent avalanche activity, cracking in the snow surface, or hollow-feeling wind slabs. If you encounter these red flags, avoid steep, wind-loaded slopes and move to lower-angle terrain where you’ll find softer snow without wind-affect.
