Highlights

Generally, avalanche hazard is minimal, but that doesn't mean avalanches aren't possible. Small wet avalanches on sunny slopes or isolated shallow avalanches in wind-loaded terrain at upper elevation are both considerations. Carefully assess the consequences of rugged terrain where small avalanches could cause dangerous falls.

Avalanche Discussion

Another meager storm will blow through the region overnight on Friday, but the east slopes of the Cascades likely won't pick up any measurable snow. The winds will have a greater impact and may form small, shallow wind slabs. These will likely be isolated to the upper elevations in very steep or confined, rocky terrain. If you observe blowing snow or cracking in wind-stiffened snow, avoid these terrain features where small avalanches can carry heavy consequences.  

While ambient temperatures are significantly cooler, the mid-April sun packs a punch, and steep, sunny slopes could still produce small wet avalanches. Rocks shedding slabs of snow and cornice failures are always a hazard. Avoid traveling under large, overhanging cornices, slopes with open glide cracks, and cliffs still holding slabs of snow.

WSDOT forecasters on Washington Pass reported small wet loose avalanches and rollerballs in the recent snow on Wednesday and Thursday. They also observed some preserved dry snow on due north aspects at upper elevations. 

If you’re venturing into terrain east of Mazama, there is a chance for deeper avalanches on older weak layers. If you dig and find a layer of weak, sugary facets or weak, moist snow in the middle of the snowpack, steer clear of steep, open slopes. Falling cornices could initiate much deeper, larger avalanches in these areas.
