Highlights

Today, avalanche danger will escalate as strong northwest winds continue to load W-SW-S-SE-E-NE aspects near and above treeline. Riders should avoid leeward slopes beneath or adjacent to ridgelines steeper than 35 degrees and be prepared for slick scoured conditions on windward aspects above treeline. Evaluate conditions by feeling for cohesive snow on representative slopes, watch for blowing snow, and pay attention to signs of instability including, recent avalanches, whumpfing noises, or shooting cracks.

    Given the consistent strong to moderate wind speeds over the last 24 hours and the amount of transported snow, small drifts may exist in isolated or unusual locations below treeline. Any pre-existing snow has been blown onto southerly aspects, which will continue to see additional loading throughout today. Small to medium-sized drifts exist in various locations given the wind's direction and impacts. Drifts will be most reactive along convex features and near shallow spots where the snowpack is thinner.

    Over the past 24 hours, winds have blown from the northwest with an average speed of 28 mph and max gust of 92 mph.

Avalanche Discussion

We've learned never to underestimate a north wind on Mount Shasta. Though it may be common for strong and extreme winds to sublimate snow particles, there's not enough confidence to say these winds won't behave oddly. Wind can transport snow five times faster than it can fall from the sky, and looking at the past 12 to 24 hours, there's potential for a lot of snow to be loaded in places. 

If you choose to go near or above treeline, expect heinously cold and windy conditions. These conditions will likely bring poor visibility for the upper mountain. Know your limits, these are the types of storms that change quickly and catch climbers off-guard and unprepared. Be sure to periodically check your partner(s) for cold-related injuries while out.
