Avalanche Summary

Avalanche conditions are dangerous. You can trigger an avalanche on several weak layers, and it can grow into a destructive and likely unsurvivable avalanche. It is challenging to identify which slopes will stay put and which will run in very large slides before they go.

You can reduce your chances of triggering an avalanche in several ways. Travel on south and southwest-facing slopes with supportable crusts underneath the new snow. Stick to slopes less than around 30 degrees steep without similarly steep slopes overhead.
