Avalanche Summary
An Avalanche Watch is in effect for the West Elk and Elk Mountains. HIGH (4 of 5) avalanche danger will develop late Thursday and last into Friday as a potent storm brings strong winds and heavy snowfall.
Strong southwest winds and heavy snowfall rates will build unstable slabs on northwest through east to southeast-facing slopes. As slabs thicken, you can easily trigger a large avalanche that might break several feet deep. One could spread across an entire mountain slope. Avalanche conditions will worsen through the day and into the night. Conservative choices are essential on Thursday. Stay off and away from slopes steeper than about 30 degrees.
