Regions: Glacier.

50 cm of storm snow overlies a weak layer of surface hoar and facets that resulted in a widespread avalanche cycle over the weekend. Numerous large natural and controlled avalanches occurred. Use caution in terrain that has not yet avalanched.

Avalanche Problems

Storm Slabs

A 50cm storm slab overlies a weak surface hoar/facet layer, and on steep southerly aspects a sun crust. This problem was involved in yesterday's large avalanche cycle. It may still be touchy in areas that have not yet avalanched.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Possible - Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 4

Wind Slabs

Moderate to strong southerly winds during the storm period of the past 36 hours loaded lee terrain and formed windslabs on open slopes. These slabs may be easily triggered from steep terrain.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Possible

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Deep Persistent Slabs

A weak basal crust is present in the alpine and has been responsible for large avalanches. Thin snowpack areas, along ridgecrests and in rocky areas are weak and facetted. These deep layers may be triggered by skiers from thin snowpack areas.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Unlikely

Expected Size: 3 - 4
