Travel conditions are the biggest hazard to backcountry skiers at the moment.

The shallow snowpack is getting less supportive with the cold temps, the days are short (sunset is just after 4 PM), and the nights feel real cold after the warm fall we've just experienced.

Plan accordingly, or better yet just wait patiently for things to get good.

Avalanche Summary

There were a few size 2 avalanches triggered by new snow and wind over the weekend. Avalanche activity has tapered off with the cold temps and calmer winds.

Snowpack Summary

The infant snowpack of 2022/23: as of Nov. 08th, average snowpack depths are ~30-40cm at 1300m, 80-100cm at treeline, and 120+cm at ridge top. These values are below threshold for burying rocks and stumps, bridging crevasses, and covering creeks.

Weather Summary

An Arctic ridge will keep things cold, clear and calm through to the end of the week. Expect overnight lows in the -10 to -15C range every night this week.
