Snowpack Summary

15 to 25cm of low density recent snow will likely form wind slab on north aspects and cross load others as the south winds pick up throughout the day. Underneath this low density snow a variety of surfaces can be found like old hard slab, facets and even bare ground.

In the mid pack, down around 50cm, it could be possible to find a thin layer of facets between old wind slabs. This layer recently produced sudden results in snowpack tests.

The height of the snowpack is variable. In areas lee of the prevailing wind, depths of up to 170cm can be found. At the lower elevation treeline terrain, snow depths decrease and are estimated at 60-90 cm.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Pay attention to the wind, once it starts to blow fresh sensitive wind slabs are likely to form.
  • Wind slabs are most reactive during their formation.
  • Closely monitor how the new snow is bonding to the old surface.
