Highlights

Temperatures have been mostly above freezing for the past week and have created unstable conditions. Numerous wet loose slides occurred in Teton Range yesterday afternoon. These events occurred on a variety of aspects. Some ran long distances. Overnight temperatures were in the 30s. Areas of unconsolidated wet loose snow are prevalent. Wet loose slides are possible on steep slopes and large wet slab avalanches are possible in active slide paths at the higher elevations. Avoid cornices and steep terrain where the snow is soft and wet.

    Some potential remains for humans to trigger deep hard wet slab avalanches in very steep upper elevation avalanche paths. These slabs could have depths from two to four feet and steep down to the ground.

    Wet loose slides are possible in very steep terrain on a variety of aspects. These slides could begin as shallow surface snow and then entrain deeper layers of snow and run long distances.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )An approaching cold front will bring an increasing chance of valley rain and mountain snow showers overnight and into the day. Skies are forecast to be cloudy and will keep temperatures in the 30s at the upper elevations. Daytime highs will rise into the mid-40s at the mid elevations and into the 50s in the valleys. Above freezing temperatures will enable the wet snow avalanche hazard to continue. Wet slides are possible were isothermal conditions (wet, loose snow) exists on steep slopes. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE. Avoid steep terrain in areas where the snowpack is soft and wet.
