Highlights

The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE above 9,000 feet and LOW below that elevation. At the higher elevations, the chance continues to trigger deep instabilities in the snowpack in a few steep avalanche paths. Avalanches below 9,000 feet are not expected today.

    Layers of weak faceted snow are buried in the snowpack. At the upper elevations, hard slab avalanches with depths to three feet could be triggered by snowmobilers in steep, avalanche-prone slopes that face north through southeast.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )Periods of rain and snow are possible overnight with additional accumulations of another inch or two likely at the higher elevations. Skies on Monday are expected to be partly to mostly cloudy with lingering chances of light snowfall in the mountains during the morning hours. The freezing level is forecast to descend to the valley level overnight and rise to around 7,500 feet during the day. Winds are forecast to increase to around 25 miles per hour with higher gusts and veer to the west-northwest.In the Togwotee Pass and Greys River forecast zones isolated areas of deep instability may persist in some upper elevation avalanche paths. Although the snowpack is mostly stable the general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE, above an elevation of 9,000 feet, in those forecast zones due to those isolated instabilities.In the Teton area increasing winds will begin to form small pockets of wind slab 4 to 8 inches deep in steep upper elevation avalanche starting zones. These small slabs and loose snow sluffs could tip a person over and carry them, long distances in extreme terrain. It is anticipated that the general avalanche hazard will be LOW. Greater than forecast snowfall amounts would increase the hazard at the upper elevations.
