Backcountry riders and skiers have the potential to trigger slab avalanches in steep terrain at the mid and high elevations. These slabs could have depths to two feet and are most likely to be found in steep avalanche starting zones and rocky areas. Avalanches at low elevations are unlikely except for in isolated pockets in the steepest terrain.
Wind slabs formed during recent snow events lie in exposed avalanche terrain. Shallow slabs from snow that fell early yesterday will be most sensitive and in some areas, snow from last weekends storm could also release bringing total slab depths to as much as two feet.
Snow shower activity is to taper off overnight and partial clearing is expected for Saturday. Mountain temperatures are expected to reach the upper twenties to low thirties and southwest winds are to be light. The general avalanche hazard is expected to remain Moderate. In the Tetons the chance continues to trigger pockets of wind slabs to eighteen inch depths in steep avalanche starting zones and cliff areas. In the Southwest Trails/Greys River area and in the Togwotee Pass area persistent slabs to three feet could be triggered in steep terrain where they are underlain by weak faceted snow.
