You can trigger an avalanche on wind-loaded slopes in the West Elks and Ragged Mountains. You may encounter wind-loaded slopes lower in the terrain than you are used to or in unusual places due to the extreme winds the past few days. You can identify wind-loaded terrain features by the smooth, rounded surface appearance and by the hollow, hard feeling you may experience when traveling across them. Areas sheltered from the wind at lower elevations and in trees offer safer travel options.
