Highlights

The possibility continues for backcountry skiers and riders to trigger slab avalanches to depths of four feet at the mid and upper elevations. Yesterday, a skier intentionally triggered an 18 inch slab on an east facing slope at an elevation of 8,700 feet on the shoulder of Pyramid Peak (Peak 9,670) in the Southern Tetons. Evaluate the snow and terrain carefully, and identify features of concern. Avalanches are less likely at the lower elevations, but could still be triggered with depths to one foot in steep terrain.

    Persistent slabs lie upon weak, faceted snow and sun crusts formed during the January dry period. There is a high degree of spatial variability associated with these weak layers, which makes them difficult to predict. In some areas the new snow is bonding well to the January surfaces, but that is not the case everywhere. These slabs may be soft or hard and could be triggered by backcountry travelers in steep, avalanche prone terrain with depths of a foot at the lower elevations to four feet at the higher elevations.

Expect partly cloudy to mostly clear skies on Monday. Northerly flow will bring cold temperate with overnight lows in the mountains near zero degrees. Daytime highs will be in the low teens. Northerly ridetop winds will range from 5 to 15 miles per hour.The General Avalanche Hazard is expected to be MODERATE on Monday. Backcountry travelers venturing into steep, avalanche prone terrain could trigger slides up to four feet deep. The persistent weak layers from January underlying these slabs have a high degree of spatial variability. In some areas, these weak layers have strengthened, but that is not the case everywhere. Evaluate the snow and terrain carefully, and identify features of concern.
