A favourable avalanche situation will prevail.

As a consequence of a gathering strong westerly wind, small wind slabs will form in the course of the day in some localities. These are to be evaluated with care and prudence in terrain where there is a danger of falling. In high Alpine regions these avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and the danger is slightly greater. Avalanches can additionally in very isolated cases be released in the old snowpack in particular on little used shady slopes. Extremely slopes are to be traversed by snow sport participants one at a time.

Snowpack The snow cover surface shows heavy impact from wind and sun over far-reaching areas. Only in wind-protected shady terrain at heightened altitudes is there still loosely-packed snow on the ground. On the northern flank of the Alps there are expansively metamorphosed (faceted) layers evident deeply embedded inside the snow cover in some places on north-facing slopes. In the southern Valais and in the Grisons, in addition, the entire old snowpack is expansively metamorphosed (faceted) over widespread areas on north facing slopes. Avalanche triggerings from deeply embedded weak layers have been registered only seldom during the last two weeks. Snow depths in the Swiss Alps continue to be far below average. In recorded measurements at the measuring stations in flat fields at heightened altitudes, they amount to approximately half the customary snow depths for this juncture of the season. Observed weather review Sunday, 05.03.2023 Following a night of clear skies it was sunny in the mountains. Below 1600 m in the northern regions, skies were overcast with high fogbanks. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m, between -2 °C in the northern regions and +2 °C in the southern regions. Wind Winds were blowing intermittently at moderate strength from northerly directions, otherwise blowing only at light strength. Weather forecast through Monday, 06.03.2023 Nocturnal skies are expected to be partly clear. During the daytime hours in the inneralpine and southern regions it will be quite sunny in spite of high-altitude cloud cover, in the northern regions it will be variably cloudy, but it will remain dry. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m, -4 °C. Wind Winds are expected to intensify in velocity, during the daytime hours to moderate strength, in high alpine regions to strong velocity, from southwesterly directions. Outlook through Wednesday, 08.03.2023 Tuesday On Monday night in the northern regions, a small amount of snowfall is possible. During the daytime hours on Tuesday it will be quite sunny in the mountains. Winds will be blowing at strong velocity from westerly to southwesterly directions. Avalanche danger levels are not expected to change significantly. Wednesday On Tuesday night and during the day on Wednesday in the northern regions, intermittent precipitation is anticipated accompanied by storm-strength westerly winds. The snowfall level will ascend from 700 m to 1600 m by Wednesday afternoon. In the western sector of the northern flank of the Alps, 10 to 20 cm of fresh snow is anticipated above 2000 m, in the western part of Lower Valais as much as 40 cm of fresh fallen snow. In the southern regions it will be partly sunny and it will remain dry. Avalanche danger levels are expected to increase in the western and the northern regions. In the southern regions and in Grisons, avalanche danger will not change significantly.
