Avalanche Activity

Backcountry tours, off-piste skiing and ascents to alpine cabins should be started early and concluded timely.

Outgoing longwave radiation during the night will be quite good. The avalanche danger will increase during the day. As a consequence of warming during the day moist and wet avalanches are possible as the day progresses. This applies in particular on very steep slopes below approximately 3300 m. Medium-sized to large natural avalanches are still not entirely ruled out. The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. The wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence at elevated altitudes. Backcountry tourers or freeriders can release avalanches. The avalanche prone locations are barely recognisable, even to the trained eye. In particular on shady slopes the avalanches can penetrate even deep layers.

Snowpack Structure

The sometimes strong wind has transported the new snow. 5 to 10 cm of snow fell on Wednesday. The surface of the snowpack has frozen to form a strong crust. The upper section of the snowpack is unfavourably layered. Several medium-sized dry and wet avalanches have been released on Thursday.

Tendency

Until Sunday the weather will be very mild. On Saturday it will be very warm. The surface of the snowpack will soften earlier than the day before. As a consequence of warming during the day and the solar radiation, the likelihood of moist and wet avalanches being released will increase significantly in all altitude zones.
