Towards its base, the snowpack is faceted and weak. In high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. From a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying.
Very isolated avalanche prone locations are to be found on extremely steep shady slopes at elevated altitudes.
Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released in isolated cases and mostly by large additional loads. This applies in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example, in the regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 2 (moderate) and along the border with France.
