Highlights

Rapid warming and intense solar radiation may create unstable wet snow on all aspects and at all elevations today. Avalanche hazard will increase as the day continues. Make localized assessments of conditions and avoid being on or under steep slopes by the time the snow is too wet.

    Today will be the second day of very warm temperatures at all elevations in the region. Despite a modest refreeze, intense April sun coupled with rapid warming this morning will surely warm snow surfaces, and the likelihood of wet loose avalanches will increase as the day continues. Wet, sticky snow, increasing boot penetration, and rollerballs are all signs that indicate wet loose avalanches are becoming more likely. Areas near radiators, such as rock features and cliff bands, are especially susceptible to increased warming and are often areas where these avalanches can be triggered. To minimize your exposure today, leave room in your plan to be off and out from underneath steep slopes before surface snow gets too wet.

Avalanche Discussion

Lots of point releases were observed yesterday. In general, these were seen on all aspects up to 12000' and near radiators, such as cliff bands. With winter like weather this last weekend, we are still in a "transitioning period" regarding the quality and conditions of our snow surfaces. There's a lot of variety, including thin surface crusts with dry snow beneath, wet sticky snow, and surfaces that are just beginning to produce melt forms over a supportable surface. Clear skies and cold overnight temperatures are helping to establish good overnight refreezes, which helps to stave off shedding and wet avalanche activity. However direct solar radiation and temperature can work fast, altering snow conditions quickly. Aspect, elevation, slope angle, and specific terrain characteristics all play into when and how warming occurs. Make localized assessments and be mindful of overhead hazards as the snow continues to warm. Give cornices a wide berth from above and below.

There is a 20% of rain on snow tomorrow up to 10000'. If this plays out, things could change significantly in the outlook.
