Highlights

New cold snow still exists today, but spring like weather is in store this coming week.  Leeward and crossloaded wind drifts in steep terrain remain a concern today and in days ahead.  Keep terrain choices simple and widen margins if there are signs of instability.

    Very specific or isolated signs of possible wind slabs were found in mid elevation zones near treeline. Though natural avalanches were not found or seen suggesting stubborn human triggering is in the realm of possible to unlikely.  Remain cautious in the steeper-leeward catchment zones that funnel into more consequential terrain traps. Try to continously visualize your "out" while moving through the terrain and if that doesn't exist, avoiding that terrain is wise. Upper elevation ATL (above tree line) showed mainly wind scouring and snow available for transport unlikely, but doesn't mean there are not isolated pockets remaining in N aspect, steep-protected terrain.

     

Avalanche Discussion

  • Todays tour consisted of tree'd north facing low angle terrain sheltered from the wind.  Terrain Above and Below treeline was either too shallow of a snow pack, wind scoured to rock or too bulletproof-blasted by winds to be fun or safe. Multiple parties in different zones, all had similiar findings, that the best and safest snow found was "sheltered tree skiing/riding"  at mid elevations.  
  • We are in the territory currently where Likelihood is Possible to Unlikely. Temps remained cold through yesterday and last night, with some solar warm up on South/solar slopes. Snotel sights are showing consolidation with zero precip for the past 36-40 hours.
