Avalanche Activity

Weak layers deep in the old snowpack represent the main danger.

Winter sport participants can release avalanches in isolated cases, with a large load in most cases. Avalanches can in very isolated cases penetrate deep layers and reach medium size. The fresh snow and local wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence in particular on steep shady slopes and at high altitude. The avalanche prone locations for dry avalanches are to be found in particular on steep west, north and east facing slopes above the tree line.

Snowpack Structure

Above the tree line snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In some regions up to 15 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen. The wind slabs are lying on soft layers in particular on west to north to east facing aspects above the tree line. The snowpack remains unfavourable also on rather lightly snow-covered shady slopes. In particular slopes that have been little used this winter thus far where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are dangerous.

Tendency

Weakly bonded old snow requires caution.
