In the east a considerable avalanche danger will persist in some regions.

Individual avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in extremely steep terrain. Even a small avalanche can sweep people along and give rise to falls.

Snowpack The snow depths on the flat measurement fields in the western regions are slightly below average, in the other regions snow depths are significantly below average. Only in the furthermost western part of the Lower Valais and in the Vaud and Fribourg Alps is there somewhat more snow on the ground than is usual for this juncture of the season. Snowpack layering is most favourable in the furthermost western part of the Lower Valais where snowfall has been heavy. On the northern flank of the Alps, the lowermost part of the snow cover is frequently well consolidated; however, higher layers have expansively metamorphosed (faceted) snow embedded inside the snowpack. Such faceted layers are especially pronounced in places where the snow is shallow and one breaks down to the ground with skis. The majority of avalanche releases which have been triggered by persons during the last few days were small-to-medium sized, in isolated cases however the releases were also large-sized. Numerous avalanches fractured down to ground-level layers, particularly in the Valais and in Grisons. In the western and the northern regions on steep, grass-covered sunny slopes, gliding avalanches continue to be possible in the Vaud Alps and Valais Alps more than anywhere else. Observed weather review Thursday, 26.01.2023 It was predominantly sunny in the mountains. The ceiling of high fogbanks lay at 1500 m in the northern regions and ascended to a bit further up during the course of the day. In the southern Ticino skies were overcast below approximately 1500 m to begin with, subsequently it became increasingly sunny during the afternoon. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m, -3 °C in the northern and southern regions, and -5 °C in the eastern regions. Wind Winds were blowing at light to moderate strength, intermittently at moderate to strong velocity in the western regions, from northeasterly directions. Weather forecast through Friday, 27.01.2023 In the northern regions skies will initially be overcast with high-foglike banks, the ceiling of the fog will ascend from 2000 m to 2600 m. In the Jura region and the Prealps, a small amount of snowfall down to low lying areas is anticipated from place to place. In the inneralpine regions, in general in high alpine regions, and in the south, it is expected to be predominantly sunny. Fresh snow Eastern Jura region, Prealps: 1 to 5 cm. Temperature Temperatures will continue to drop. At midday at 2000 m, between -5 °C in the western regions and -8 °C in the eastern regions. Wind Winds will be blowing at light to moderate strength, at moderate to strong velocity in some places in the Jura region and in the central and eastern sectors of the Main Alpine Ridge during the course of the day, from northeasterly directions. Outlook through Sunday, 29.01.2023 On Saturday in the northern regions there will be high fog, the ceiling will lie at 1600 to 2000 m. Above that ceiling, as well as in the inneralpine regions and in the south, it will be predominantly sunny. On Sunday the ceiling of the high fogbanks will lie at 1200 to 1500 m in the northern regions, in the other regions of Switzerland it is expected to be predominantly sunny. On Sunday, winds will slacken off and temperatures will rise somewhat. Avalanche danger is expected to incrementally decrease.
