Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of the strong wind the wind slabs will increase in size additionally.

As a consequence of new snow and a storm force northerly wind, sometimes large wind slabs formed in all aspects. In addition further wind slabs will form. Adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls dry slab avalanches are possible, even quite large ones. Avalanches can be released, even by a single winter sport participant or triggered naturally. Avalanches can in some places be released in deep layers in particular on steep west, north and east facing slopes. In addition loose snow avalanches are possible. Backcountry touring calls for caution and restraint.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 10 to 25 cm of snow has fallen. The wind was violent at times. The wind will transport the new snow significantly. The new snow and wind slabs will be deposited on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack above the tree line. The old snowpack will be weakly bonded, especially on west, north and east facing slopes, and on south facing slopes at elevated altitudes.

Tendency

Considerable avalanche danger will persist. The avalanches can in some places be released easily. Restraint is advisable on this first sunny day.
