Northern Cairngorms

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised accumulations of unstable windslab will develop on West through North to North-East aspects above 950 metres. The greatest instability will be on steep wind sheltered locations such as coire rims and gully tops. On these aspects as it turns milder wet snow surface instabilities will develop and remaining cornices which mostly overhang North-West to Northerly aspects will become unstable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Forecast Weather Influences: Strong Southerly winds will increase to Gale force during the day. Occasional light snow showers will become heavier during the morning before turning to light rain at all levels by the end of the period. The 500 metre freezing level will steadily rise to 900 metres by dawn, then to above summit levels by the end of the day. Observed Weather Influences: Cool and sunny. Light Westerly winds backed to become fresh Southerlies. The freezing level rose to around 800 metres by midday. ObservedSnowStability: There is a thin cover of unconsolidated snow on most aspects above 950 metres. The old snowpack has become very firm and is well bonded and stable throughout. Large cornices overhang some North-West to Northerly aspects. The avalanche hazard is Low.
