Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches have been reported in this region. We suspect that natural avalanche activity took place on Friday and Saturday.

Observations remain limited in this region. If you head into the backcountry, please post to the Mountain Information Network.

Snowpack Summary

Over the past few days the wind has come from the southwest and then shifted to the northwest, wind effect could be found on all aspects. At lower elevations a new crust can likely be found on or near the surface.

15 to 30 cm of new snow from Friday’s storm overlies a crust on all aspects at treeline and south aspects in the alpine.

The lower snowpack contains a crust from early November.

Treeline snow depths are highly variable.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Continue to make conservative terrain choices while the storm snow settles and stabilizes.
  • Watch for newly formed and reactive wind slabs as you transition into wind-affected terrain.
  • Closely monitor how the new snow is bonding to the crust.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
