Avalanche Summary

No new natural avalanche observed on Tuesday, along the highway corridor.

A rider triggered a sz 2.5 avalanche off Bruins Ridge on Monday, this feature has reloaded a few times this year, and it continues to fail near the base of the snowpack on facets.

Also on Monday, several natural avalanches observed up to sz 2.0.

On Sunday we had both natural and artillery controlled avalanches, mostly size 2-3, with several size 3.5 failing in the storm snow.

Snowpack Summary

The recent 30-50 cm of storm snow is settling and bonding to the previous snow surface.

The consistent snowfall in Feb has helped strengthen and promote rounding of the mid and lower snowpack.

The deep persistent weakness at the base of the snowpack consists of rounding facets and a decomposing crust in some locations.

Weather Summary

Flurries continue as an approaching cold front brings cooler than normal temperatures and moderate snowfall amounts for Thursday.

Wed: Cloudy w/ isolated flurries, Alp High: -12*C, Mod SW winds, Fz lvl: 600 m

Thurs: Snow, 15 cm, Alp High: -11*C, Mod SW winds, Fz lvl: 600 m

Fri: Cloudy w/ scattered flurries. 4 cm, Alp High: -13*C, Light gusting to Mod SW winds, Fz lvl: 500 m

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Continue to make conservative terrain choices while the storm snow settles and stabilizes.
  • Watch for signs of instability like whumpfing, hollow sounds, shooting cracks or recent avalanches.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
