Regions

Glacier.

Another snowfall and ongoing wind loading will keep the storm slab problem fresh.

Stick to low consequence terrain until this new snow has had a few days to gain strength.

Confidence

Moderate

  • Forecast snowfall amounts are uncertain.

Avalanche Summary

Natural avalanche activity is expected in steep open terrain Thursday night into Friday.

There has been sporadic natural activity in steep alpine terrain this week, typically during periods of strong wind. Several size 2 avalanches were observed from the steep gullies of Mt McDonald and Tupper on Wednesday. Two size 1.5s were observed near Grizzly couloir on Tuesday.

Snowpack Summary

Another 15-20cms will fall over the ~100cm of snow that has fallen in the last 8 days.

In the alpine and open tree line areas recent snow has been redistributed by strong winds. In sheltered terrain and below tree line the snowpack is well settled and supportive.

There are a couple of crusts in the mid and lower snowpack that have not shown signs of reactivity recently.

Weather Summary

The parade of storms continues, bringing another snowfall with strong winds.

Tonight Snow (10-15cm). Alpine Low -6 °C. Freezing level (FZL) 1200m. Ridge wind moderate gusting strong SW.

Fri Snow flurries (~10cm). High -5°C. FZL 1200m. Moderate gusting strong SW wind.

Sat Mixed sun & cloud. Low -23 °C, High -15 °C. Light NW wind.

Sun Mainly cloudy, isolated flurries. Low -16 °C, High -9 °C. Light SW wind.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Avoid avalanche terrain during periods of heavy snowfall.
  • Continue to make conservative terrain choices while the storm snow settles and stabilizes.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
