Regions

Northwest Inland, Howson, Microwave-Sinclair, North Bulkley, South Bulkley, Telkwa.

Look for sheltered terrain for the best riding.

Be alert for changing surface conditions as you shift elevation and aspect.

Confidence

Moderate

  • Uncertainty is due to the speed, direction, or duration of the wind and its effect on the snowpack.

Avalanche Summary

No new avalanches have been reported in the last 3 days. Wind slabs likely remain triggerable in specific features, especially where they sit over facets from the cold snap.

Snowpack Summary

Up to 20 cm of storm snow overlies heavily wind affected snow in exposed areas in the west of the region, tapering to 5 cm of recent snow in the east. A layer of sugary facets is buried around 50 cm deep and is slowly gaining strength. Below 1300 m, a near-surface crust is present.

The mid and lower snowpack have no layers of concern. Snowpack depths are generally around 150-200 cm deep at treeline.

Weather Summary

Tuesday Night
Partly cloudy. 2 to 5 cm of snow. 30-40 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -6 °C.

Wednesday
Mix of sun and clouds. 2 to 5 cm of snow. 20-40 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -6 °C.

Thursday
Mix of sun and clouds. 2 to 5 cm of snow. 40-60 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -9 °C.

Friday
Mostly cloudy. 4 to 10 cm of snow. 80 km/h southwest ridgetop wind. Treeline temperature -3 °C.

More details can be found in the Mountain Weather Forecast.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Be careful with wind-loaded pockets, especially near ridge crests and rollovers.
  • Use caution above cliffs and terrain traps where even small avalanches may have severe consequences.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
