Avalanche Activity

Caution is to be exercised on steep northwest, east and southwest facing slopes in particular at intermediate and high altitudes. In some localities increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of the new snow.

In particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls as well as above approximately 2500 m wind slabs formed. They are rather rare and are difficult to recognise. The wind slabs can be released, especially by large additional loads,, caution is to be exercised in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example in particular at intermediate and high altitudes, and on very steep slopes. Here the likelihood of avalanches is higher. Dry avalanches can in isolated cases be released in near-ground layers. Weak layers exist in the snowpack on steep north, northeast and northwest facing slopes.

Snowpack Structure

2 to 5 cm of snow fell in the last two days in all altitude zones. Over a wide area 10 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall on Thursday below approximately 1200 m. The new snow is very loosely bonded in all aspects in all altitude zones. Snow depths vary greatly above approximately 2000 m, depending on the infuence of the wind. In addition, from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying. The old snowpack consists of faceted crystals. Weak layers exist in the snowpack especially on shady slopes. Reports filed by observers and snow profiles confirm the unfavourable bonding of the snowpack in particular in shady places that are protected from the wind.
