Avalanche Activity

The more recent wind slabs represent the main danger. At elevated altitudes the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent.

The cold fresh snow as well as the wind slabs formed by the sometimes strong wind remain prone to triggering and generally in high Alpine regions. These are to recognise and to be assessed critically. Avalanches can be released in near-surface layers, even by a single winter sport participant. Caution is to be exercised adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls, and on steep slopes. Some medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large natural avalanches are to be expected. On very steep slopes dry loose snow avalanches are possible. In addition at the base of rock walls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain, some dry slab avalanches are possible. They can in isolated cases be released in the old snowpack and reach quite a large size.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities up to 30 cm of snow has fallen since Tuesday above approximately 2500 m. In some localities up to 15 cm of snow will fall until Saturday above approximately 2000 m. The sometimes strong wind will transport the snow. At high altitudes and in high Alpine regions snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The new snow of the last two days is lying on soft layers in all aspects above approximately 2300 m. The weather will be cold. Individual weak layers exist in the snowpack in shady places that are protected from the wind, especially above approximately 2300 m.

Tendency

Wind and new snow: The avalanche danger will increase but remain within the current danger level.
