As a consequence of a moderate to strong wind from northwesterly directions, sometimes large wind slabs will form adjacent to ridgelines as well as in high Alpine regions. These can in some places be released by a single winter sport participant. Additionally avalanches can also be released in deep layers. The wind slabs are to be avoided in particular in very steep terrain. Below the tree line the avalanche prone locations are more rare and the danger is lower. As a consequence of solar radiation moist loose snow slides are possible as the day progresses, but they will be mostly small.
In the vicinity of peaks the wind slabs have increased in size moderately. Avalanche prone weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on steep, rather lightly snow-covered shady slopes. Over a wide area various wind slab layers are lying on the smooth surface of an old snowpack. Faceted weak layers exist in the bottom section of the snowpack at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions. The weather conditions fostered a gradual settling of the snowpack at low and intermediate altitudes.
