Regions

Glacier.

Avalanche hazard will increase throughout the day.

Natural and rider triggered avalanches are more likely if more snow falls than forecasted.

Watch for signs of an unstable snowpack, including avalanche activity, cracking, whumphing and hollow sounds.

Confidence

Moderate

Avalanche Summary

Natural avalanche activity is expected on Thursday with incoming snow and wind.

Isolated natural avalanches up to size 3 from the steep terrain off Mt. Macdonald on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A rider triggered a sz 2.5 avalanche off Bruins Ridge on Monday, this feature has reloaded a few times this year, and it continues to fail near the base of the snowpack on facets.

Snowpack Summary

Fresh storm snow will accumulate today with moderate to strong SW winds. This snow covers wind slabs in exposed areas, breakable crust on steep solar aspects and settled snow is sheltered areas.

The consistent snowfall recently is strengthening the mid and lower snowpack, more typical of Rogers Pass.

The deep persistent weakness at the base of the snowpack consists of rounding facets and a decomposing crust in some locations.

Weather Summary

A cold front moving over the province Thursday, will bring moderate snowfall and moderate to strong winds. Convective flurries will continue Friday-Saturday.

Tonight: Cloudy w/flurries, 5cm, Alp Low -12*C, Mod SW winds

Thurs: Snow, 15-20cm, Alp High: -10*C, Mod gusting to strong SW winds, Fz lvl: 800 m

Fri: Flurries, 5 cm, Alp High: -12*C, Mod SW winds, Fz lvl: 400 m

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Watch for avalanche hazard to increase throughout the day.
  • Make conservative terrain choices and avoid overhead hazard.
  • Be especially cautious as you transition into wind affected terrain.

Problems

Storm Slabs

Storm Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer (a slab) of new snow that breaks within new snow or on the old snow surface. Storm-slabs typically last between a few hours and few days (following snowfall). Storm-slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
