Avalanche Summary

No new natural avalanches have been reported. A few small (size 1 to 1.5) slab avalanches were reported on Saturday as having occurred more than 48 hours ago.

Snowpack Summary

Above 1500 m, 10 to 30 cm of recent storm snow has been redistributed by strong southwest winds. Below 1500 m, a crust exists on or near the surface.

The remainder of the snowpack is dry, with small faceted crystals to the ground. 

Snow depths vary significantly, between 70 to 130 cm around the White Pass.

Terrain and Travel Advice

  • Watch for areas of hard wind slab on alpine features.
  • A hard crust on the snow surface will help strengthen the snowpack, but may cause tough travel conditions.

Problems

Wind Slabs

Wind Slab avalanches are the release of a cohesive layer of snow (a slab) formed by the wind. Wind typically transports snow from the upwind sides of terrain features and deposits snow on the downwind side. Wind slabs are often smooth and rounded and sometimes sound hollow, and can range from soft to hard. Wind slabs that form over a persistent weak layer (surface hoar, depth hoar, or near-surface facets) may be termed Persistent Slabs or may develop into Persistent Slabs.
