Wind and new snow: The avalanche danger will increase during the day.

The new snow of Saturday will be deposited on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate to strong southeasterly wind, sometimes large wind slabs will form in the afternoon in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as above approximately 2000 m. The new snow and wind slabs can be released naturally. In addition in the afternoon an increasing number of medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large dry avalanches are possible. They can occur in particular in starting zones where previous releases have taken place. Fresh wind slabs must be evaluated with care and prudence. As the snowfall becomes more intense the prevalence and size of the avalanche prone locations will increase. They can be released by a single winter sport participant above approximately 2000 m. These places are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. The current avalanche situation calls for experience in the assessment of avalanche danger.

30 to 60 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall until Saturday above approximately 1500 m. The new snow of Saturday is bonding poorly with the old snowpack in some places in all aspects. Caution is to be exercised on wind-protected shady slopes. Towards its surface, the snowpack is unfavourably layered and its surface consists of surface hoar. As a consequence of highly fluctuating temperatures and solar radiation a crust formed on the surface during the last few days, in particular on sunny slopes. A lot of snow is lying at intermediate and high altitudes.
