Recent new snow lies upon firm old snow surfaces. Loose snow slides involving this new snow and small, isolated pockets of new soft slab up to one foot in depth could be triggered by skiers and riders in steep terrain. On steep northerly aspects above an elevation of 9,000 feet hard slab avalanches could be triggered by the weight of a single person.

    Skiers and riders venturing onto steep, north facing slopes above 9,000 feet could trigger hard slab avalanches with crown depths to three feet. Suspect locations are steep, rocky slopes where faceted snow persists at the base of the snowpack.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )A brief break between weak weather systems will occur overnight. Skies will be mostly clear until midnight. Moisture, clouds and warm air aloft will begin to move into the region during the early morning hours. Temperatures should be inverted at daybreak with lows in the coldest valley locations in the single digits and temperatures at 10,500 feet near 20 degrees. Light snowfall or flurries will begin in the mountains at daybreak and become widespread during the day with accumulations of two to three inches possible by sunset. Temperatures will rise into the 20s. Winds will be southerly at five miles per hour and veer towards the southwest and increase to 12 miles per hour in the afternoon.The general avalanche hazard is expected to remain LOW in all areas except for the upper elevations of the Togwotee Pass region where the hazard will be MODERATE. Hard slab avalanches up to three feet in depth could be human triggered on north facing slopes in isolated areas above an elevation of 9,000 feet in the Togwotee Pass area.
