Continued warm temperatures will keep concerns about wet avalanches in the forefront of our minds. Temperatures overnight Tuesday will drop below freezing for a few hours above 11,000 feet, but this will only be enough for a weak surface freeze. You can expect the supportable surface to break down quickly on Wednesday. Loose avalanches could trigger more destructive Wet Slab avalanches, especially on northeast and northwest slopes near and above treeline, where the most concerning snowpack structure exists
Fortunately, reducing your risk of triggering a wet avalanche is relatively simple. Plan ahead to start and end the day early, avoiding steep slopes if you feel yourself sinking into the snowpack.
