Highlights

Expect wet snow instabilities to increase on steep sun exposed slopes at the mid and upper elevations. Lower elevation areas that did not receive a deep freeze will also be quick to re-warm and become unstable. Watch out for snow surfaces becoming wet and unconsolidated. Roller balls and point releases are clear indicators of surface instabilities. Moving off slopes and shifting aspects as the day warms will be conducive for safe travels today.

    North and east aspects at lower and mid-elevations hold previously saturated snow surfaces. As the day's temperatures increase, the cohesion holding that snow together will weaken and become unstable. Exercise caution on steep northeasterly slopes presenting thawed surfaces during periods of warming. A boot penetration deeper than the boot cuff means it's time to move aspects or seek less penetrable snow.    

    The sun can still effect slopes when clouds and below freezing temperatures are present. Today's sun appearance will reawaken frozen surfaces and cause superficial warming on steep southerly slopes. Even small wet-loose slides can become large enough to knock riders off their feet and carry them into unforgiving terrain. The best defense against wet snow instabilities is to time your travel. When snow surfaces are cold and hard is also when they are strongest. Early mornings and times of less sun exposure are periods when this naturally occurs.

    It's not a question of if, but when these cornices will decide to break free.  Cornices can break unexpectedly and suddenly, pulling back further than expected onto ridge tops. For now, best to give them a wide berth and minimize time spent beneath them. A cornice fall is essentially a huge trigger and will most likely wipe out any unstable snow beneath it, causing the potential for very large and dangerous avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

Spring has surely sprung! Yesterday presented the warmest day we've experienced in a long time. Today, cold temperatures are being re-introduced to the region, giving the thawed snow surfaces a chance to regain strength and begin going isothermic. Lower elevations that did not re-freeze hold some uncertainty to how they will respond to increasing temperatures and sun effect over the duration of the day.  Pay close attention for signs and symptoms of wet-loose snow and do not let your guard down. Even small slopes can have large consequences.  

EVENT: The Mt Shasta Avalanche Center's Community and Members Appreciation Party is happening on Saturday, April 15th, from 4-7 pm at Spring Hill Nursery and Gardens in Mount Shasta City.
