Highlights

Large deep slab avalanches with severe consequences could still be triggered by the weight of a single person. At the higher elevations strengthening southwest winds may begin to form isolated pockets of shallow wind slab on leeward aspects. Avalanches are unlikely below an elevation of 8,000 feet.

    Dangerous deep slab avalanches 2 to 5 feet in depth could be human triggered on persistent weak layers that formed in mid-January and December. Large triggers, such as snowmobiles, are more likely to initiate an avalanche on these buried weak layers. However, the weight of a single person could still trigger one of these slabs if a shallow weak zone is encountered. Previous tracks on a suspect slope should not be considered to be an indication of stability.

Snow will be preceded by increasing clouds, warming temperatures and strengthening southwest winds. Light snow is forecast to develop by evening and continue into Thursday morning before tapering off to flurries. Accumulations of 4 to 8 inches are possible.Large deep slab avalanches with severe consequences could still be triggered by the weight of a person. These slabs could fail with depths to five feet on buried weak layers of faceted snow that formed in mid-January and December. Strengthening winds may begin to move snow to leeward aspects along the highest ridge crests. The general avalanche hazard is expected to be MODERATE at elevations of 7,500 to 10,500 feet and LOW below an elevation of 7,500 feet.
