Highlights

Although the snowpack is mostly stable below 9000 feet as well as in most areas above that elevation, a slight chance remains to trigger slabs in high elevation terrain that formed during last weeks storm cycle. Larger triggers such as groups of skiers or snow machines may be required to cause failure of these slabs, however, if triggered these slabs could be large. Identify and avoid features of concern today.

    Dense to hard slabs were formed last week during a major storm that brought heavy snowfall and strong southwest winds to the area. Failure on the many density breaks during the storm is no longer expected, however failure does remain possible on the weak snow or hard crust layers buried during the early days of the storm. If triggered these slabs could have depths from one to four feet and are most likely to be found in very steep avalanche paths, particularly near cliff areas.

Avalanche Discussion

Another weak system is to bring snow to the area tonight and Saturday morning. Three to five inches of precipitation is expected at higher elevations during this time. Temperatures will remain on the warm side and some rain may fall at the lower elevations and valleys. Winds are to be from the south with 10-20 mph averages. The general avalanche hazard will be Low in the Tetons and Southwest Trails areas and Moderate in Togwotee pass area. Mostly stable snow exists. Avalanches are unlikely in the current snowpack and weather pattern until enough new snowfall creates new surface slabs. The exception to this is at Togwotee where deep slabs remain a concern on steep north facing avalanche terrain above 9000 feet. Remember that Low hazard does not mean no hazard exists and even small slides can carry harsh consequences in aggressive or extreme terrain.
