Avalanche Activity

SC 16.02 Unstable windslab on NW,N,NE to SE aspects above 800m. Steep wind sheltered features most affected. Aval haz Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab is expected to develop in both depth and distribution with North-West through North-East to South-East aspects above 800 metres most affected. Accumulations will be poorly bonded on steep wind sheltered features such as gully tops, around scarp slopes and on convex slopes. Fragile cornices will also continue to develop. Elsewhere, there will be occasional deeper drifts at low levels, any exposed ground will be scoured or bare. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers at all levels before briefly turning to light rain in a fluctuating freezing level with further snow showers in the afternoon to 700 metres. Strong winds mostly from the Southern quadrants, strengthening from the West early morning, easing afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight snow down to 600 meters, dry conditions during the day. Overnight Southerly winds strengthening to gale force and veering to the West.

ObservedSnowStability: Localised accumulations of unstable windslab are forming in wind sheltered locations on North-East to South-East aspects above 800 metres. Fragile cornices are developing above these aspects. Locations most affected are sharply defined corrie rims, gully tops and deep burn lines. Elsewhere only shallow snow exists with exposed terrain wind scoured. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
