AN AVALANCHE WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR THE ABAJO MOUNTAINS. Heavier than anticipated snowfall has created dangerous avalanche conditions and the avalanche danger is HIGH. Natural and human triggered avalanches are likely on all aspects and at all elevations. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended.

THE FOREST SERVICE UTAH AVALANCHE CENTER IN MOAB HAS ISSUED A BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WARNING.

* TIMING... 3 PM MST MONDAY THROUGH 6 AM MST TUESDAY.

* AFFECTED AREA...FOR THE ABAJO MOUNTAINS OF SOUTHEASTERN UTAH

* AVALANCHE DANGER...THE AVALANCHE DANGER HAS RISEN TO HIGH.

* REASON/IMPACTS...RECENT HEAVY SNOW COMBINED WITH WIND HAS CREATED WIDESPREAD AREAS OF UNSTABLE SNOW AND DANGEROUS AVALANCHE CONDITIONS. BOTH HUMAN TRIGGERED AND NATURAL AVALANCHES ARE LIKELY. STAY OFF OF AND OUT FROM UNDER SLOPES STEEPER THAN 30 DEGREES. AVOID TRAVEL IN AVALANCHE TERRAIN.

3:00 pm. Unexpected amounts of heavy snowfall have prompted an afternoon update.

More than 20" of snow has fallen at Camp Jackson since 9:00 a.m. this morning which translates to well over 2' at upper elevations. SE winds have averaged 25 mph with gusts to 35. This is an incredible amount of snowfall in a short amount of time and this is a huge red flag for avalanche danger. Snowfall is expected to continue into tonight.
