Regions: Glacier.

Various persistent weak layers are creating a widespread and very touchy problem. Limited options result in skiers being concentrated in the same areas. Carefully assess slopes, manage group exposure and be aware of who is skiing above and below you.

Avalanche Problems

Persistent Slabs

Various persistent weak layers (surface hoar, suncrust and facets) are buried by 80 to 180cm and are creating a widespread problem. These layers are very reactive to skiers, producing avalanches to size 2.5. They may be triggered from a distance.

Aspects: All aspects.

Elevations: All elevations.

Likelihood: Likely - Very Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 3

Wind Slabs

Strong S winds during the storm transported snow, creating windloaded pockets and windslabs on exposed slopes at treeline and above. Overnight the winds calmed and windslabs are now buried by 15cm. Winds from the N today will reverse load slopes.

Aspects: North, North East, East, South East, South.

Elevations: Alpine, Treeline.

Likelihood: Likely

Expected Size: 1 - 3
