Stevens Pass

Generally safe avalanche conditions can be found. Expect a range of travel conditions, from firm and icy at upper elevations, to wet and punchy at lower elevations and everything in between. 

On Monday Josh Hirshberg found a few inches of new snow over the recent crust on the west side of the pass. Small wet loose avalanches were possible to initiate on steep south facing slopes below treeline. Quiet weather will lend itself to a settled snowpack and avalanche conditions on Tuesday. Small, wet slides could pose a threat if you are above cliffs or around other terrain traps. Very steep, low elevation slopes may hold wet and punchy snow. If you sink in deeper than your ankle, avoid steep slopes nearby. 

Open creeks and downed trees pose another hazard while traveling through the mountains. Firm and icy conditions could be dangerous on very steep slopes at upper elevations, where a slip could result in a long slide.

An impressive storm and resulting avalanche cycle occurred on January 11-13th in the area. While the avalanche danger is low, continue to practice awareness of your surroundings and stay conscious of changing weather and snow conditions. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
