Avalanche Activity

As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation mostly small moist and wet avalanches are possible.

Over a wide area over a wide area 15 to 30 cm of snow fell in the last few days above approximately 1800 m. The wind was moderate to strong in some localities. Over a wide area new snow and wind slabs are lying on the smooth surface of an old snowpack. The moist fresh snow and the scattered mostly small wind slabs can be released in some cases in particular on northwest to north to northeast facing aspects above approximately 2400 m. In particular, however, there is a danger of moist snow slides during the day. As a consequence of warming during the day and solar radiation the avalanche prone locations will become more prevalent as the day progresses. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls, especially on very steep slopes, and on wind-loaded slopes. Weak layers in the old snowpack can be released in isolated cases and mostly by large additional loads, especially on very steep north and east facing slopes in particular between approximately 2400 and 2700 m in little used terrain.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 15 to 30 cm of snow has fallen since Friday above approximately 1800 m. The new snow is lying on a crust in all aspects above approximately 2200 m. The fresh wind slabs have settled a little in all aspects. The old snowpack will be well bonded on steep sunny slopes. Faceted weak layers exist in the snowpack on north, northeast and northwest facing slopes. In all regions in all altitude zones only a small amount of snow is lying for the time of year. Hardly any more avalanches were reported.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will decrease gradually.
