Quick report

Collapsing
isolated

*Weather: Below freezing, westerly moderate wind increasing throughout the day, sunny with some cloud cover. Snow Conditions: Top layer of snow was powdery unless in a consistent sun exposure area at which point it eventually became crusty. *Red flags: Known persistent slab problem in the area on N/NE aspects, was able to create small collapses in the snowpack above two separate terrain traps on N/NE aspects while ski touring, observable wind loading into draws on N/NE aspects due to westerly winds. No signs of recent avalanches. Column test: CTH, 75 cm deep, began to separate from the column. Weak faceted layer sitting on a hard crust layer under the collapsing portion ECT: CTM, 75 cm deep, slab of snow completely separated from extended column. Same snow makeup as column test. Repeated the test and got the same results. Hardness test: Multiple weak and faceted layers above and below hard crust layers throughout the snowpack.
