Quick report

Cracking
specific

There were 8 to 10 inches of new snow from the weekend storm that had previously been wind loaded onto east aspects at upper elevations by west winds. Today, moderate east winds were beginning to scour east aspects and redistribute the snow onto west aspects. I observed cracking in drifts and cornices on previously wind loaded east aspects and thinner cracking on newly loaded west aspects.

I dug several quick snow pits to take a look at the interface below the recent snow and found widespread weak, faceted snow. North aspects had weak facets directly below the new snow. South aspects had a crust of varying thickness with facets underneath. In wind sheltered terrain, the 8 to 10 inches of new snow was not slabby yet and did not produce propagation in snowpit tests. In wind loaded terrain, where the slab was thicker and stiffer, I observed multiple propagating test results.
