Quick report
On Sat 4/12 I saw that the road to Bunny Flat was still closed (update, road just opened today Wed 4/16), so called the climbing ranger number to inquire about sled access, huge props to them for getting back to me with the beta! On Sunday 4/13, I started on sled at the nordic center and (eventually, after a few wrong turns) made it up to the old ski bowl. Conditions were a bit different from the forecast, it was supposed to be warmer with calm wind, but it was cold and super windy in the AM, so the snow was locked up solid, which made for some tricky sledding conditions up high. I parked at 8k; ran into a couple local sled-skiers there, they said that they were there on Sat and it was much better conditions (odd because Sat was supposed to be colder and windier, but they said the wind was from the N and the bowl was protected; they were able to sled up to 10k). There was a pretty strong E wind at this point. Originally I wanted to go up to Thumb Rock and check out the chutes dropping to Mud Creek glacier, then skin back to Shastarama and ride back to the sled, but due to the late start and firmer conditions I bailed and just went to Shastarama. The wind died down in the afternoon and the corn started to ripen. I ended up dropping in after 4 PM (!!), normally that would be way too late but on this day the corn was perfect. Aside from a couple scratchy turns at the very top, it was 3k of buttery smooth corn all the way back to the sled. Smooth snow pretty much everywhere, no signs of instability, good coverage.
